AGFT (A Gift For Teaching), the primary provider of school supplies for low income students in high-need schools throughout Central Florida, is celebrating their 16th birthday this year. To help celebrate, community partners got together to help give AGFT a makeover with nearly $60,000 worth of renovations. Some of the new features include an interior design “re-design”, fresh paint, carpet, fixtures and a mural created by Walt Disney World employees.
Last week, volunteers helped pack nearly 1,000 backpacks with notebooks, paper, pencils, rulers, crayons, and other school supplies for homeless students who have been participating in the free “Summer of Dreams” program.
Fifth Third Bank sponsored the 10-week day camp, providing kids with food, academic enrichment, mentoring and recreation. Parents were also offered free financial counseling.
AGFT is kicking off its annual back-to-school supply drive next week…hoping to raise $150,000 and millions of school supplies. If you’d like to Just DO Something…Anything! to help…please donate loose-leaf paper, 24-count boxes of crayons, 8-count packs of colored markers, spiral notebooks, or 12-count packs of colored pencils. Those are just some of the items in need.
Last year, A Gift For Teaching distributed more than $9 million dollars worth of school supplies.
