Shut Down?

Today all of India is closed. No, really. Closed. On strike. An entire country is shut down for a day in protest of some decision or other that a particular group of people doesn’t agree with. This happens periodically, and most people here don’t really give it a second thought, but to me it seems crazy – buses and trains don’t run, schools are closed, shop gates remain locked, and the streets are eerily quieter than usual.

I think today’s cessation has something to do with new restrictions on purchasing fuel…but the details seem to get a bit fuzzy in the process of coming through my tv screen and the front page of the newspaper. What does come clearly through the television screen are images of angry, passionate people. People willing to put their lives and reputations at risk to prove a point.
